The Essential Aldo Leopold: Quotations and Commentaries

Wish I'd bought it when I first heard about Alyson, but glad I have it now, as it moves me to action every time I pick it up - if there had been a book like this when I started out to be an artist in the late 70"s, it might be in its tenth revision (things have changed so much!) but it would still be my most valuable business resource!Marianne

Wish I'd bought it when I first heard about Alyson, but glad I have it now, as it moves me to action every time I pick it up - if there had been a book like this when I started out to be an artist in the late 70"s, it might be in its tenth revision (things have changed so much!) but it would still be my most valuable business resource!Marianne Hornbuckle, painter/sculptor. The first 20 pages consist of poor quality hand sketches of leaves with minimal directions and measurements provided. In truth, this book purchase was a gift for one of my granddaughters. I would not even call this a bookbut more of a booklet given it's size. I wish the other review had been posted when I ordered this to save me the trouble of buying and then returning it. The book is readable, easy to follow and use. I am making a kit for my daughter to have a creative outlet at college. I am getting so much out of this book. I wanted to like this but it's going back. Some of the ones I like most are made with a technique not taught in the book. Aldo Leopold was the author of "A Sand County Almanac" and one of the most influential conservationists of his day. It's hard to encapsulate everything that the 18th century was into a single volume, but as far as fashion goes, this book gives a darn good try. From conservation education to wildlife ecology, from wilderness protection to soil and water conservation, the writings of Aldo Leopold continue to have profound influence on those seeking to understand the earth and its care. For the first time, the most important quotations of the great conservationist Aldo Leopold, author of A Sand County Almanac, are gathered in one volume. Prominent biologists, conservationists, historians, and philosophers provide introductory commentaries describing Leopold's contributions in varied fields and reflecting upon the significance of his work today.. Leopold biographer Curt Meine and noted conservation biologist Richard Knight have assembled this comprehensive collection of quotations from Leopold's extensive and diverse writings, selected and organized to capture the richness and depth of the North American conservation movement

Knight is Professor of Wildlife Conservation at Colorado State University, and Co-editor of Stewardship Across Boundaries (Island Press, 1998) and A New Century for Natural Resources Management (Island Press, 1995). Richard L.

"We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes. I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes--something known only to her and to the mountain. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view."--Aldo Leopold . I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters' paradise
